The wait is over. The Galaxy S6 is has been launched at MWC 2015 - and it looks really rather special. It's joined by the Galaxy S6 Edge: a curved screen variant of the phone which won't be sold in at that great a volume. Think Samsung Galaxy Note Edge to the Galaxy Note 4.
But enough about the others - how good is the new Galaxy S6? The short answer is: very good indeed.
We
know why you're here though: you want to know everything there is to
know about this new phone. Luckily we've been good little
phone-gatherers and put all the information in one easy to read place,
right here.
Hands on with the Samsung Galaxy S6 - our first impressions
Hands on with the Samsing Galaxy S6 Edge - our first impressions
Cut to the chase
What is it? The next flagship smartphone from Samsung
When is it out? Not confirmed, but likely in the first half of April.
What will it cost? A lot, at least as much as the pricey Galaxy S5
Samsung Galaxy S6 release date and cost
The Samsung Galaxy S6 will follow last year's Galaxy S5
and be on show at MWC 2015. The invite to Samsung Unpacked predictably
launched the flagship phone, and it should go on sale within a month or
two of launch. The Samsung Galaxy S4
and S5 both hit stores in April, of 2013 and 2014 respectively, so it's
probable you'll be able to buy the Samsung Galaxy S6 from April 2015.
Why so long? These higher-end devices likely need more manufacturing
steps, so getting the volumes necessary to service the world will take
more time. In
terms of price, it's going to be the same as before, according to the
rumours - although it could be a little more expensive given the
improved materials used. We're having to say rumours as Samsung hasn't
given us anything concrete to work with - but the below information from
AndroidPit does hint at some eye-watering prices:
In the UK this should translate into about £38 per month on contract if you want the phone for free.
Design
Sadly
for Samsung, the design of the Galaxy S6 leaked out onto the internet
before the big reveal - and they were completely accurate.
The
phone is made of an attractive fusion of glass and metal, with the
latter material the predominant choice. It's more solid and premium
feeling than the Sony Xperia Z range, for instance, as it's more compact
and fits in the hand better. The
size is actually pretty impressive, as it's not much larger than an
iPhone 6, yet fits in a much larger and higher resolution screen than
Apple's best.
It's sadly not waterproof though - that's going to
be on the S6 Active, whenever that appears. The ruggedisation that
didn't work on the S5 has been ditched in favour of the improved design -
it does mean the battery is no longer removable and the microSD slot is
out of here.
Samsung Galaxy S6 screen
Samsung has stuck stick with the excellent Super AMOLED displays we've seen from the company for quite a while on the Galaxy S6.
But
this time things have become a lot more awesome: much like the Galaxy
Note 4, the Galaxy S6 comes with a 2560 x 1440 pixel QHD resolution. It's
a really clear and crisp display - although questions have to be asked
over whether it will hurt the battery too much, especially as that power
pack is actually a bit lower in capacity than in years gone by.
Camera
Samsung
has made the camera one of the key features on this new phone, and has
stuck a 16MP sensor on there - but massively overhauled it from last
year.
The Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge and S6 have identical snappers,
with the South Korean brand looking to keep them as similar as possible -
it's just the screen that's the differentiator. Let's
get into the specs here: the rear camera has a 16MP sensor, with an
aperture of f1.9 - this thing is going to be excellent for low light,
and an improvement of 34% over the Galaxy S5.
It still has the
same Auto HDR mode as before, and will show how the pic will look in HDR
mode before you take it - plus smart Optical Image Stabilisation will
keep the shake away. The
front facing camera has been upgraded too, with the same low light
performance (which is a big jump from last year's model - plus the
ability to balance the white levels using infra red.
Battery
Here's
what's worrying about the battery in the Samsung Galaxy S6; it's only
2550mAh, compared to the 2800mAh of the phone from last year.
This
means that either: Samsung was able to make the chipset, screen and
operating system more efficient and could therefore get away with a
smaller battery, or it realised that it HAD to make an amazingly
designed phone, otherwise it would lose more ground in the high end
smartphone game. It seems worryingly like the latter might be true, but we'll wait until review units roll around before passing judgement.
At
least the phone will work wirelessly, and will all the standards as
well, meaning if you see a charging panel without wires, you can plonk
your S6 down on it without worry.
It can also charge up enough for 2 hours' video playback in just 10 minutes thanks to the new faster charging system.
Thank God. That's what we need our phones for.
Samsung Galaxy S6 power
Android Lollipop is here for a variety of different handsets and it brings with it 64-bit support which we see on the Galaxy S6.
What's
interesting here is Samsung hasn't opted for the Qualcomm Snapdragon
810 chipset, preferring its own engine - likely based on its Exynos
technology although it's not confirmed that just yet (although did tell
us that it will be 64-bit enabled). The
decision to use 3GB inside is therefore a little bit maddening, as 4GB
would have allowed the brand to fully exploit the 64-bit architecture.
But given there aren't that many apps or services out there which can
make use of the extra power yet, perhaps it's a bit redundant.
The Galaxy S6 does use new type of flash memory featuring in the handset called UFS (Universal Flash Storage)
2.0 to enhance data speeds and power consumption, as well as improve
speed of use - which is why the microSD slot has been dropped.
To
make up, Samsung will offer the Galaxy S6 in 32, 64 and 128GB variants,
but extra memory fans will be saddened by the loss of expansion.
Samsung Galaxy S6 operating system
While Samsung is cooking up its own Tizen operating system, the Galaxy S6 sticks with Android, and obviously Lollipop since that's the latest version.
That's the good news, though the fact that it's still overlaid with Samsung's TouchWiz UI may not be met with much enthusiasm. There's
good news there too though, as Samsung has slimmed down the UI quite a
lot, taking out a lot of the annoying pop up menus and streamlining the
apps to have fewer options littered around everywhere.
It does
still have the same look and feel though, despite flatter icons, so if
you weren't a fan before this 'overhaul' isn't likely to change your
mind too much.
Samsung Galaxy S6 other features
There are a
few things that we knew Samsung would include, and it's done just that.
the brand has been putting its fingerprint scanner on a number of
phones and tablets so we're not surprised to see in the S6 too.
However,
it's a touch-based variant, rather than the erratic swiping model,
making it more in line with Apple's Touch ID than the S5's swipe-style
reader.
The Galaxy S6 also keeps the heart rate monitor from the Galaxy S5, since that's also been included on the Galaxy Alpha and Note 4, although it's moved to the right of the camera sensor. Mobile
payment is well stocked on this phone, with Samsung allowing you to
even use the phone to mimic a magnetic stripe from a credit card (how
this will work, we don't know... it's not THAT thin).
With the ability to use NFC and QR codes for payment, think of it this way: if it's not Apple Pay, Samsung will support it.
Samsung Galaxy S6 rivals
Samsung has a lot of big name competition surrounding it. The HTC One M9
has already launched, with another boost to make it one of the most
refined phones on the market, but with the might of a Qualcomm
Snapdragon 810 chipset, 3GB of RAM and Dolby support too.
Sony isn't going to be launching a new phone for a couple of months so it's the Xperia Z3
is its main competition that boasts a Snapdragon 801 chipset as well as
a waterproof body and a 1080p display - although it's only a few months
until we'll see the new Xperia Z4. Then there's , of course, the iPhone 6
that has been universally praised. We gave it 4.5 stars out of 5 loving
its great new design and much improved battery life - has Samsung got
that one licked with the launch of the Galaxy S6?
The technology in the smartphone era is
going for the next revolution, every month you see a device in the
market, which is more powerful, faster and amazing. According to experts
last quarter of 2015 would be most amazing for all smartphone geek
because internal news confirms that Samsung engineers are testing the
most amazing smartphone of the decade. Well, it hints towards the next
Samsung Galaxy S7 smartphone.
In the month of April, Samsung released
the Samsung Galaxy S5, which was quite successful, but later other
smartphones from other leading manufacturer like Apple, LG and Sony
overcome it. No doubt, Galaxy S5 was amazing but it was not
revolutionary and yes Samsung fans were expecting something amazing.
However, just launched Galaxy Note 4 looks pretty promising but again it
is also not revolutionary. It is faster than Note 3, Galaxy S5 and
contains few amazing features but the smart technology experience is not
new.
Yes, we are talking about something new
and revolutionary. On other hand, just launched Samsung Galaxy Note Edge
is interesting but not a big change in the market. We have seen bent
display, edge display, 3D display in the smartphones but nothing that
would follow the future’s path. And expecting something bigger from
upcoming Galaxy S6 smartphone would be unfair. But in the secret mines
of Samsung, they are cooking very interesting technologies. In 2015 we
might see super fast processor, amazing display technology and
especially superfast charging batteries. And this all would be
implemented in future phones but question remained with us that “When”?
Well, connecting all this information with Galaxy S7 then it
would not be wrong, as this phone would be releasing after a year and
few months. Let’s learn about Samsung Galaxy S7 about its release date,
specifications, special features and possibilities.
Galaxy S7 release date possibilities:
Samsung Galaxy S6 is about to release
within couple of months and you can’t expect the Galaxy S7 release date
near. According to the previous release date of Samsung Galaxy S series
super smartphones, Galaxy S6 would make its entry in the month of Feb
2014 and there is possibility we might Galaxy S7 in the last quarter of
2015. The market competition is forcing every brand of smartphone to
bring something latest and faster before their schedule.
Galaxy S4 released March 2013
Galaxy S5 released March 2014
Galaxy S6 would be releasing coming February 2015
Galaxy S7 release date Q4 of 2015
There are few rumors in the market that
Samsung would be redefining its Galaxy S series and we might see a new
name for the series but who knows if Samsung would continue and Galaxy
S7 would be launched with the name Galaxy S7 only.
Galaxy S7 specifications and features:
If we talk about the hardware and
specifications of Galaxy S7 then no doubt, it would be carrying the most
advanced hardware of the generation. As per the rumors, at the launch
of Samsung S7, market trend would be touching the limit in the hardware
specs. In 2014, 3GB RAM become normal in smartphones and for 2015
similarly, 4GB RAM would be common. So, if you are expecting 4GB RAM in
S7 then you won’t be wrong. On other hand, in 2015 we would experience
the fastest mobile smartphone processor, which might process at the
frequency of 3.X GHz. Already, Samsung Galaxy Note 4 is working at clock
frequency of 2.7 GHz.
On other hand, as we discussing there
must be something unique in display configuration of Samsung Galaxy S7
and yes Samsung would follow the expectations of people. You can expect
4K display or flexible display from next Galaxy S series smartphone.
Just two years ago, in Smartphone industry HTC and LG were two beast to
experience the 3D display in their smartphone, however the response were
not in favor because of the 3D limitations in the display and now who
knows if Samsung will bring some high resolution, low consumption and
most efficient 3D display in smartphones.
True Octa-Core 3.X GHz processor
3D 4K resolution display or 2K flexible display measuring 5.2 inches
4GB RAM
20 MP ultra low light sensitivity sensor
Ultra Fast Finger Print detective Sensor
A mini Projector
Superfast charging battery (Charging time 5 Minutes)
No doubt, a revolution is needed in
smartphone industry and next year is going to be very surprising for us.
HTC is silent since long in the market and other manufactures are also
going to shout loud and going to welcome 2015.
Galaxy S7 price range:
At present to discuss about Samsung
Galaxy S7 price would not make sense. Samsung always sell its devices
like hot cakes. Galaxy Note 4 is Samsung’s costliest smartphone and its
sale is going pretty good. And defiantly its price would fall after the
launch of Galaxy S6. At present we can hope, Samsung would bring
something more at cheaper price like other Chinese manufacturer are
doing in the market.
The completion:
Samsung Galaxy S7 could be the world
first revolutionary smartphone of the industry and it may take to the
technology definition for smartphone to the next level. But how it would
happen and what exactly would be there is still a question for us.
However, we would try to bring all latest updates and connected leaks
with S7 at earliest as possible, so stay tuned with us. Don’t forget to

Samsung's latest phablet, the Galaxy Note 4, made its debut to
international acclaim last year, but whispers of its next gen version,
the Galaxy Note 5, has started making the rounds early this year.
Gizbot
and ValueWalk are suggesting that the Galaxy Note 5 will be powered by
an octacore Snapdragon 810 processor with 4GB of RAM. However, GSMarena
is reporting rumors of an Exynos 7420 chipset for the device, which
would have four Cortex A57 cores and four Cortex A53.
As for
storage options, there are reports that the device will come in
different variants which range from 16GB to 128GB. But PCAdvisor
predicts that the Galaxy Note 5 will come with 32GB storage out of the
box and will be expandable up to 128GB.
The device will reportedly
have a 5.9-inch 4K AMOLED display with an astounding resolution of 3840
x 2160, which means that it will have a pixel density of 743ppi. The
phone is also expected to have front-facing speakers and an all-metal
chassis. There are also rumors suggesting that that the phone will come
with a 4000 mAh battery cell and an ultra-battery saver mode.
According
to Valuewalk, the rear-facing camera in the Galaxy Note 5 could be as
powerful as 21 MP, and while the website suggests a 6MP front facing
shooter, other sites suggest a 5MP front camera.
As Samsung has a
history of launching a new Galaxy Note phone just before IFA each year
in Berlin, PCAdvisor predicts a Sept. 3, 2015 launch for the Galaxy Note
5. The phone is expected to cost $930 off-contract.
Samsung has indeed revealed its new flagship smartphone today, but
there are actually two: The Galaxy S6, and the Galaxy S6 edge. The
company’s latest premier smartphones are mostly similar on the inside,
but with different external body designs, both of which push the
envelope in terms of what Samsung has done with its Galaxy lineup in the
past.
The Galaxy S6 and S6 edge combine metal and glass, eschewing almost
entirely the standard plastic setup that Samsung has show a preference
before in previous smartphone designs. A metal frame runs throughout,
sandwiched between two panes of durable Gorilla Glass 4, which has also
been treated on the inside with a special reflective material coating,
giving them a jeweled-metal look that explains why some early leaks made
it seem like Samsung had opted for metallic rear casing surfaces.
While both are marked departures for Samsung, the Galaxy S6 edge may
be its most ambitious design to date, with a screen that curves away on
either side of the front of the device, and a subtler, matching curve on
the back surface, too. The effect is both visually stunning and
pleasant to hold, as you can read in our first hands on impressions of both devices.
Of course, the S6 lineup also boasts improved specs, including a
slimmer and lighter design, compared to the S5 and older Galaxy
hardware. Here’s a breakdown of the primary improvements:
5.1-inch 2560×1440 Super AMOLED display with 577 ppi
Exynos Octacore processor, 3GB LPDDR4 RAM
32/64/128GB UFS 2.0 internal storage
Android 5.0
F/1.9 16MP rear camera with optical image stabilization and live HDR
F/1.9 5MP front camera with live HDR
Category 6 LTE with 300 Mbps down/50 Mbps up max theoretical speeds
Wi-Fi 802.11 AC with HT80 MIMO, Bluetooth LE, NFC, IR blaster
